 Isabella Lenarduzzi’s interview on quotas

by euractiv.com

Shouldn’t the public sector lead the way and impose quotas on women representation?

Indeed! First the public, then follows the private. Public companies currently have a very poor power balance between genders. In Belgium, only 15% of senior executives in public administrations are women. However, women make up more than 60% of all workers! Quotas should be established in public administrations and publicly owned companies.

You can see with the Belgian government, there is a much higher representation of females in the government than say in the US, because there is a legal requirement for parity in the list of candidates. Because we force this representation, the end result is a more diverse government with a more accurate population representation.

Talk the language of opportunity, sustainability, profitability

by Avivah Wittenberg Cox www.women-omics.com

We are delighted to see that the research organisation on professional women, Catalyst, has discovered men. After 40 years of lobbying for women’s professional advancement, the American non-profit (run mostly by women) has discovered, along with other pro-women campaigning organisations, that men may be partners to progress.

Build confidence to match your competence

Written by Natalie R. Manor www.womensmedia.com

As a business coach, I’ve often encountered female executives with confidence problems. Ellen is a typical example. One MBA, 8 years of experience as a Division Manager and four departments reporting to her, Ellen still was not sure that she was an effective leader. No matter the amount of feedback she received or the ratings on her performance review—which were good—she still believed that she was missing the “excellence in leadership” by a large margin.

Be fluent in both Pink and Blue

source: www.womensmedia.com
Written by Ronna Lichtenberg

I was talking with one of the great corporate futurists, Mort Darrow, about a conversation he’d had with some corporate bigwigs in the 1970’s. He told them the entry of women into the labor force was going to be the biggest change of the twentieth century. The guys weren’t worried. The only problem they could see was training women to behave properly; that is, like them. Lots of women, me among them, tried to adopt the male rules and all went out and bought our big, floppy, silk bow ties.

Karen’s Hot Tips for starting a business

written by www.karendarbydirect.com

Take the plunge. Do it - don't just dream about it. Anyone can have a great idea; it's about turning those ideas into reality. There is never a right time, you're never too young or too old. If you're dreaming about it, grab the opportunity now. Sure it takes courage, but sometimes you’ve got to take that leap of faith. Ask yourself – what’s the worst that can happen and can you live with the consequences? Now I’m not asking you to put everything you own on the line – I’m big fan of taking risks with other people’s money. But don't be afraid of failure, you risk more than failure if you don't try to turn your business dreams into reality; you risk not achieving your potential in life.

Comment être une mère parfaite? En acceptant de ne pas l’être…

source www.levif.be/weekend/fr

source www.linternaute.com

 Network or work?

source www.fmwf.com

The run up to Christmas brings with it invitations to various events, but a recent survey has found that 81% of senior decision makers at small businesses spend less time at networking events at the moment due to a lack of time and feeling guilty about leaving the office. It’s not a surprise, particularly given the current economic climate, that business people are loath to leave their desks and feel their time is better spent with their heads down, getting on with the job in hand.

Advocates line up to praise sotomayor

by Kayla Hutzler WeNews correspondent

Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court this week has stirred an outpouring of favorable reaction from some of the most prominent advocacy groups focused on the legal rights of women, Latinas and Hispanics. "I think it is a phenomenal nomination for the country and a monumental one for the Hispanic community," said Maria Cardona, founding member of Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary. "She had a top-notch education and finished first in her class at Princeton and in the top 1 percentile at Yale Law School. She will bring more depth and breadth than any juror in a hundred years if she is appointed to the Supreme Court."

Les sciences ont besoin des femmes...

source www.tv5.org

How an influx of women is changing medicine

source www.women-omics.com

Whyever would their working fewer hours hurt the profession or health care?
Medicine is one of the many professions in which women now form the majority of entrants, and in the UK, women will make up a majority of practicing physicians in the next decade. But how those women practice, and especially at the consultancy level, the pinnacle in UK medicine, differs from the traditional (male) medical tradition and hierarchy. A Royal College of Physicians study found that women hold a significant number of consultancies in general health, paediatrics and public health but just 8.4% of surgical consultancies.  Six pièges qui ruineraient votre CV

source www.references.be

Rapes Soar in Eastern Congo's culture of impunity

by Dominique Soguel, www.womensenews.org

Military operations and rebel reprisals in eastern Congo have fueled a rise in sexual violence this year, but perpetrators face minimal consequences. An effort to drive out rebel groups has only contributed to the problem. The second of four stories. Justice is an uphill battle in a region where Rwanda's 1994 genocide, which killed an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus, have left smoldering political and ethnic enmities that are shifted and stoked by brutal competition for the region's mineral resources.

source www.valeriecolin-simard.com

Brussels 12 June: There’s nothing more exhausting than being unauthentic

by Sylvie Verleye

When I hear people talk about values, a word that often pops up is authenticity. People want to be above all authentic and appreciate that in others. But what does that word mean ? And what does it mean to be authentic in presentations ? I started my queste with a definition of the word : ‘being authentic means being true’. The word is derived from the Greek ‘authentikòs’. I learn that it is difficult to get a clear explanation of the word because it is interpreted in different ways depending on the discipline.
