What’s good for women is good for business and good for men

Ilene H. Lang is chief executive of Catalyst, a nonprofit membership organization focused on expanding opportunities for women in the workplace.

Our research at Catalyst shows women are still severely underrepresented in business leadership where they could contribute to rebuilding the economy in turbulent times. But power is in the purse strings: until women are equitably represented in the leadership of the private economic sector, they will be marginalized in every other arena.

It’s increasingly obvious that what’s good for women is good for business and good for men. More women in leadership means more customers, more perspectives, more creativity, and more diversity of thought and approach. And there’s a direct financial correlation as well. Our studies found that having a higher percentage of women in senior positions and on corporate boards correlates strongly with better financial performance.

Yet despite some progress, women, including women of color, are still rare in senior corporate leadership. Though women make up 46 percent of the American labor force, they hold only 15 percent of corporate officer positions in the Fortune 500 companies. Of all the chief executives of the Fortune 1000 companies, only 24 are women. Those companies help set the agenda for the American workplace. Women in executive and senior positions can help drive solutions to work-life challenges — solutions that could benefit all workers as well as their employers.

What will be the impact of the crisis on women and how can women increase their chances?

by Mirella Visser, President EuropeanPWN
source europeanpwn.net

What will be the impact of the crisis on women in the workforce and how can women increase their chances? It is too easy to say that every crisis offers opportunities and women just have to ‘get on with it’. History has shown that a crisis hits hardest those whose position on the labour market is weakest. But also that a well-informed and pro-active attitude increases the chances to benefit from a crisis instead of suffer from it. This IWD will be a day of reflection and action planning for women on how to survive and even take advantage of the crisis.

How to prepare and deliver your elevator speech?

By Dr. Lois Frankel  www.drloisfrankel.com

You may have caught me on Larry King Live earlier this month. If so, you heard me talk about the importance of distinguishing yourself from others in this competitive economic climate. Unfortunately, there wasn’t time to explain that one way to do this is to prepare a great elevator speech for that moment when you’re asked the open-ended question, “What do you do?” or “What kind of job are you looking for?” When delivered well, elevator speeches give your listeners a valuable overview and put a framework around your message. They also make you sound razor-sharp.

Voire l’opprobre.

Intervention of Axelle Red and live extracts of her latest album « Sisters & Empathy » to Forum JUMP - 23/04 Bozar

Axelle Red, committed artist, militant humanist, law graduate from VUB, evokes in her new album, Sisters and Empathy, encounters made during a number of trips to the most forsaken places on the planet. A daring, feminist & legitimate approach by an artist keen to avoid limiting herself to the facile.

« I don't see Sisters and Empathy as a 'new direction' album, but as a legitimate stage in my career. Soul or Rhythm & Blues have been an integral part of my work from the very beginning as has the desire to bear witness to realities which I find revolting and which touch me deeply. I am a woman, a mother and a daughter. My opinions are founded on the encounters I have had. »

Trump your inner critic with your inner champion

by Marian Baker from pinkcommunity.com

In today’s climate of headlines about panic in the financial markets, we need to practice smart fuel for our true prosperity even more. It takes rigor and daily practice. There are effective, simple ways of tapping into the energy of your “Inner Champion” (while trumping those limiting thoughts that sabotage enjoyment and tangible success). A while ago, over lunch I read “The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity” by Edwene Gaines (so far, it looks great, while I don’t agree 100% with everything.) I don’t find much value in affirmations that are overly positive, feel-good statements that don’t seem real. (In my Wake Up Inspired book, there’s a bit about “Hold the sugar” and how to create variations on the classic affirmation style that may work better for you.)

3 mistakes that keep most women executives unemployed during a recession

by $100K+ Executive-Level Career Karen Armon

Mistake #1: Using the Wrong Executive Job Search Model
Most female executives, when looking for their next career opportunity, fall back into old models that we learned early in our careers. These tactics keep us in the mainstream but that is where all the competition is! What we want to do is stand out, break through, and move up in our career. During a recession, this is particularly true because women traditionally tend to make less than men and pressure to reduce our salary requirements just to land a position are strong. But that is a surefire way to keep our career circling the airport and never landing on the runway of executive leadership!

Career Barbie (now 50) is on a Mission and Advocates Girl Power

source thenextwomen.com

As Barbie celebrates its 50th birtday in March 2009 with spectacular events and her own mansion, it can be said that Barbie is more of a trendsetter and career woman than many people might think. Barbie openly advocates girl power. Even though Barbie first appeared in the now-famous black-and-white striped swimsuit and signature ponytail, a Barbie with a career has always been part of the product range. Indeed, Barbie has had more than 108 inspirational careers, such as Fashion Designer (1960), Career Girl (1963), Surgeon (1973), Working Woman (1993) and Producer (2005). Barbie encourages girls to imagine themselves in and “try on” different careers and personalities.

Italy, a difficult place for women at the top?

Annalisa Gigante, MBA 14, Chief Bisness Development and Marketing officer at Adecco

Women represent only 2% on the boards of big companies in Italy (and they are often shareholder representatives) compared to 44% in Norway and 26% in Finland and Denmark. This is only one of the indicators of the country which Annalisa left shortly after her MBA at SDA Bocconi and her first job at Bain-Cuneo. “People typically mistook me for a secretary or asked me what job my father did”. Today she is the number one in marketing at a worldwide recruiting giant.

What's the bridge from awareness of gender inequality to action?

If women are the ones who make decision in the market place, why don’t they make decision inside companies? Ilene H. Lang, CEO of Catalyst, thinks that the bridge from awareness of gender inequality to action plans is men’s fairness.

 Can Women Rescue the Economy?

Interview with Carol Frohlinger, CEO Negotiating Women and co-author of « Her place at the table » a woman’s guide to negotiating five key challenges to leadership success (New York).

Do you think that the fact that financial institutions are male-dominated lead to risky behaviour and strategies? Do you believe the current crisis might have been avoided if there had been more gender equality at the top of financial institutions?

Women tend to take a broad view when making decisions that will expose themselves and their organizations to risk. My experience has been that women seek more information and take the time to build more support before venturing into risky terrain, perhaps because they are aware that the outcomes of their decisions will be watched very closely.

Should maternity leave pay the price of the failure to engage men in their share of care?

source www.womenlobby.org

The recent proposal of the European Commission (October 2008) to increase the minimum length of maternity leave and to extend the mandatory period, currently at two weeks, to six weeks, has sparked debate among feminists and others as to whether women should be singled out in this way as this form of leave only relates to women. The main problem is that the maternity leave proposal is just one of three proposals currently on the table part of the European ‘package’ of measures to reconcile private and professional life but those proposals are being dealt with in different ways. Two of these proposals, namely amendments to the 1992 Maternity Leave Directive and repeal of the 1986 Directive on Self Employed workers and their Assisting Spouses are both being discussed by the Council and European Parliament (Women’s Rights Committee) as part of a co-decision procedure.

We condemned strongly the closure of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre in Iran!

In the course of this year, we celebrate internationally the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The Defenders of Human Rights Centre in Iran wanted to commemorate simultaneously this event as the rest of the world. Nevertheless, to talk about the Human Rights in Iran is a taboo and to be against this taboo carries punishments. Consequently, the defenders of Human Rights are arrested, tortured and in certain cases kidnapped and killed.
