What better quote to end the turbulent year 2008 with?You can’t change what you don’t know The report measures the gaps in terms of economic opportunities, education, political empowerment and health between women and men in 130 countries. Analysing the numbers creates awareness. After all, you can’t change what you don’t know. But does this report present a full picture of the current status of affairs in the world economy? Only quantitative, not qualitative From our membership, we know that many women simply do not reach the qualitatively high level jobs men do. Not only because of ‘time-out’s’ in their careers, or a (temporary) choice for part-time work, but also because of factors such as company culture, lack of re-entry and mentoring programmes, expectations about ambitions women may have, prevailing stereotypes about women leaders, and many other (in)visible barriers. Recent onderzoek toont aan dat het hebben van een goede relatie met je collega’s en baas je carrière een flinke boost kan geven. Zo zou vriendschap met collega’s werkgerelateerde stress flink verminderen. Uit research, uitgevoerd door de University of Rochester Medical Center, blijkt dat zowel mannen als vrouwen sneller depri worden, wanneer ze het gevoel hebben op hun werk niet ondersteund te worden op sociaal vlak.

Female entrepreneurs may be better placed to survive the recession than their male counterparts because of the difference in their approach to debtrisk and the management and motivation of staff according to new research. 'Men are more likely to have taken on more credit and are now finding access to finance more difficult' said Rebecca Harding Managing Director of Delta Economics. In recent research under taken by the economic consultancy firmfemale business owners were found to be less concerned about barriers to finance and specific issues faced in the sector in which they operated. 'Female entrepreneurs are building on more robust foundations' says Harding adding 'It's cheap to motivate people and treat people wellbut it can be very expensive to go out and take on lots of debt'.

Selon une étude menée par le DULBEA (ULB), les écarts salariaux de genre en Europe ne sont plus majoritairement explicables par des différences en termes de « capacités productives » entre hommes et femmes mais essentiellement par un niveau de rémunération inférieur à caractéristiques égales. Ces caractéristiques productives sont elles-mêmes déterminées en très large partie par des pratiques et habitudes discriminatoires: ségrégation sectorielle, professionnelle, durée de carrière, expérience professionnelle et rentabilité des entreprises dans lesquelles les femmes sont majoritairement représentées. L‘arsenal juridique et conventionnel ne suffit pas à supprimer les écarts salariaux de genre. Read more

Some of the reasons for this are external ones and thus harder for us to control. For example, although the wage-earning gulf between men and women has narrowed within the past thirty years, women still don’t earn as much as men. We lose earning traction when we move in and out of the workforce to have children and to take care of parents.

 Source: www.impactsud.orgSeul on ne peut rien mais avec tous, cette lutte fait toute la différence; et durant toute cette année 2008, nous avons su compter votre soutien.La paix est une denrée rare en RDC : les faiseurs de paix, de conférence, de solution négociée multiplient les initiatives mais sur le terrain rien ne change depuis tellement d’années ! En 2009, cela fera plus de 15 ans que la région est en proie à des guerres et conflits à répétition. Aucun des protagonistes ne tient parole : dès qu’un accord, une déclaration conjointe, ect … est signé, l’encre a à peine le temps de sécher que les fusils crépitent et les morts se comptent par dizaines de milliers puis les déplacements de populations viennent gonfler les camps … plus de 2 millions d’êtres rien qu’à l’intérieur des frontières congolaises.
