The World Economic Forum has just published its annual report on the Global Gender Gap rankings. Once again, the Nordic countries have obtained the best rankings with Norway in first place, taking over from Sweden. Eight European countries figure in the first ten rankings (the Nordic countries, Ireland, the Netherlands and Latvia) and 14 of the first 20 countries are European: Germany (11th), the UK (13th), Switzerland (14th), France (15th) and Spain (17th). Belgium comes 28th (lower than last year) just behind the United States and just ahead of Austria (and only European countries such as Portugal, Italy, Luxembourg and Greece rank lower!) Four benchmarks are used for the rankings: education, health, involvement of women in the economy and in politics. All the western countries have managed parity regarding education and health. The differences arise when looking at business and politics. And amongst those countries – apart from the Nordic countries – the one that figures best for women’s participation in business is the United States (12th) while the participation of their women in politics is deplorable (56th). In the field of economy Belgium drops down in ranking … we are nearly at the bottom of the table in Europe, especially for wage equality, working hours and the number of women as decision-makers. Women have better chances of soaring high in their careers in the Nordic and Anglo-Saxon countries (UK – 30th and USA – 9th) and in France (25th) and Germany (22nd). The only benchmark that stops Belgium from being at the bottom of the class for equality is the participation of women in politics, especially the number of women MPs, for which we rank 10th. But don’t hold your breath … isn’t that the sole function for which there is a legal requirement for parity in the list of candidates?

KMO-plan van Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) en Sabine Laruelle (MR)

Minder paperasserie, snellere betaling van facturen en een beter sociaal statuut voor zelfstandigen. Dat zijn de hoofdlijnen van een ambitieus KMO-plan waarmee de ministers Sabine Laruelle (MR) en Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) op 3 oktober naar de ministerraad trokken.
Niet minder dan 43 actiepunten heeft minister van KMO's en Zelfstandigen Sabine Laruelle in haar actieplan neergepend. Zij heeft daarbij de steun en medewerking gekregen van minister van Ondernemen en Vereenvoudigen Vincent Van Quickenborne gekregen, en hoopt vandaag de hele regering achter zich te krijgen.

Quand l'inimaginable est en train de se produire, force est de constater qu'un bon réseau est un bien précieux. À défaut de venir en aide au système bancaire en proie à une fièvre carabinée, et à nos portefeuilles qui reculent de manière inquiétante, de bons amis et un réseau solide sont un baume contre bien des incertitudes.
Tout le monde se rappelle où il était le 11 septembre quand la terrible nouvelle est tombée. Et il y a fort à parier que dans quelques années - à une échelle moins vaste, bien sûr - nous serons nombreux à nous rappeler que nous étions là, nous, lorsque les banques américaines menaçaient de s'effondrer.
Nous avons vu aux nouvelles télévisées le président sortant, George Bush, qui proposait de réparer les pots cassés en allant puiser des milliards dans la poche de ceux qui vivent déjà sur la corde raide, des citoyens comme vous et moi.
Au moment où j'écris ces lignes, la Chambre des représentants vient de rejeter la solution proposée par Bush. Nous nageons en pleine incertitude, la banque belge Fortis vient d'être rachetée par trois gouvernements européens, et personnellement, je n'aime autant pas penser au rendement de mon portefeuille en ce moment... Mais je ne peux m'empêcher de penser aux centaines, voire aux milliers de gens qui perdront leur emploi à la suite de cette crise.

5.4 millions de morts. C'est le nombre d'enfants, de femmes et d'hommes victimes, depuis 1998, du conflit en République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). Les civils sont massacrés : pillages, viols et assassinats sont leur lot quotidien.

Ce conflit est le plus meurtrier au monde depuis la seconde guerre mondiale. La paix y est sans cesse reportée. La signature d'accords de paix entre gouvernement et certains groupes rebelles en 2002 puis les élections libres de 2006 n'ont pas suffi. Aujourd'hui, enfin, c'est la plus importante mission des Nations unies jamais déployée (la MONUC). Dans l'Est du pays où de nombreux groupes rebelles prospèrent, les ressources naturelles attisent toujours les convoitises.
