In a very slow market where there are often difficulties in matching job offers to job demands, JUMP is strengthening its collaboration with Unique, its Knowledge Partner, by developing for you a tailor-made Job coaching programme, taught by consultants who are specialists in career training. Each workshop is held on a weekday afternoon in French and in Dutch, each time in a different town. These sessions are open to everybody at a cost of €50 and the number of places is limited to 15 people. These workshops organised by Unique for the Woman’s Academy are intended for women who are looking for a job or a career change. They are interactive and down to earth, and the offer includes help with drafting a personal plan of action at the end of the programme. The first workshop on CV writing will be held on 18 December in French in Liège, and on 19 December in Dutch in Antwerp. Through this new JUMP initiative we wanted to reach out to all women by helping them to use all their talents. It replaces the “general public” day of the JUMP Forum which next year will focus on a single day, Thursday 23 April, and will be held at the BOZAR, right in the centre of Brussels.

Prior to these two Job Coaching workshops, the Woman’s Academy is organising a workshop on press relations on 14 November in French in Wavre and a speech coaching workshop on 5 December in Dutch in Brussels.

Vrouwen, ict en innovatie. Het is niet zo'n evidente combinatie. Dit heeft verschillende oorzaken die voor een deel manifeste vooroordelen blijken te zijn. De oorzaken zijn te vinden in vooreerst onderwijs, dan in de tewerkstelling en ten slotte in het imago van de ict-sector zelf.

Blijkbaar begint de ict-kloof tussen meisjes en jongens al in het onderwijs. In het secundair onderwijs kiezen slechts weinig meisjes voor een informaticaopleiding. In het schooljaar 2006-2007 bedroeg volgens cijfers van het Departement Onderwijs in het secundair onderwijs de instroom van meisjes 21%, die van jongens liefst 79%. Die trend zet zich in het hoger onderwijs door, met een lichte stijging van het aantal meisjes in 2007 en 2008. Uit recente cijfers blijkt dat meer studenten zich inschrijven voor het eerste jaar positieve wetenschappen, ingenieur of ict, maar dat vooral in de hogescholen de industriële wetenschappen nog altijd mannenbastions zijn. Er zijn nog geen 10% vrouwen te vinden en de trend daalt. Aan de universiteit zijn de ingenieursstudies dan weer goed voor 25,25% meer vrouwen in 2007-2008 dan het jaar voordien.

A woman with a top-tier advertising job in New York has a major presentation to make. The night before, her husband insists that she needs to relax and takes her out to dinner, where he plies her with drinks. The next morning, she stumbles through her big event.

A second woman, who has a high-level position at a Chicago mortgage and banking operation, travels east for an important dinner meeting. During the appetizer course, her cell phone rings. It's her husband. He asks her to help him choose the bedtime story he's about to read to their kids. She fields the call and comes back to the table. The phone rings again. And again. Two more rounds of questions from her husband, who says one of the kids has a toothache, and then that he can't get them to sleep. The woman turns off her phone. The economic crisis has increased the need for more women in the boardroom, according to the leaders of some of the UK’s biggest companies.

The group, which includes J Sainsbury chairman Sir Philip Hampton and Peter Sutherland, chairman of BP, is calling for action to get more senior women working at the highest level in British business, after little progress since the turn of the millennium.
