Message from Isabella Lenarduzzi, Founder of JUMP

Men are transforming themselves – which makes us really happy! While organising the colloquium « Parole d’hommes » in Brussels on 17 – 18 October next, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the way that men are transforming themselves. It is not possible for women to win complete autonomy for themselves without a parallel ground change in men, especially for the one who is ‘the man of our life’. Men and women – we are finally escaping from stereotypes in our attempts to become our own selves, in other words, to be unique! This collective transformation may be experienced in a negative way at individual level. This is why it’s absolutely vital to oppose ‘virility’ to ‘machos’ in order to support a greater inner change in men. Men who have undergone this transformation admire women who are accomplished and not childish. They are not frightened by them – on the contrary, in such women they find inspiration. The more that women reach their self-fulfilment , the more these men love them. Women and men have never been closer to each other than now. We are currently moving towards a new collective and individual balancing of our masculinity/feminity. JUMP is completely on the side of those men who are brave enough to follow this path, and wishes every success to the event « Paroles d’Hommes » so that hopefully we can move from the love of power to the power of love.

The Bittersweet End of Maternity Leave
source: www.womenco.com
I enjoyed a glorious twelve weeks of maternity leave home with my baby girl thanks to FMLA (Family & Medical Leave Act.) I can’t even believe that I contemplated taking less time off from work. Twelve weeks fly by fast even without twelve weeks worth of sleep. And just when I’ve started to get the hang of how to be a mom, it’s time to return to work and learn how to be a working mom. If you’re like me and you find yourself ready to return to work, here are a few gems to file away.

Centered leadership: How talented women thrive

source : The McKinsey Quarterly by Joanna BarshSusie Cranstonand Rebecca A. Craske
A new approach to leadership can help women become more self-confident and effective business leaders.
Women start careers in business and other professions with the same level of intelligence education and commitment as men. Yet comparatively few reach the top echelons.
This gap matters not only because the familiar glass ceiling is unfairbut also because the world has an increasingly urgent need for more leaders. All men and women with the brains the desire and the perseverance to lead should be encouraged to fulfill their potential and leave their mark.
With all this in mind the McKinsey Leadership Project—an initiative to help professional women at McKinsey and elsewhere—set out four years ago to learn what drives and sustains successful female leaders. We wanted to help younger women navigate the paths to leadership andat the same timeto learn how organizations could get the best out of this talented group.
To that end we have interviewed more than 85 women around the world (and a few good men) who are successful in diverse fields. Some lead 10000 people or moreothers 5 or even fewer. While the specifics of their lives vary each one shares the goal of making a difference in the wider world. All were willing to discuss their personal experiences and to provide insights into what it takes to stay the leadership course. We have also studied the academic literature consulted experts in leadership psychology or ganizational behavior and biology and sifted through the experiences of hundreds of colleagues at McKinsey.

Are women really worth less?

A look behind the gender wage gapand what we can do about it
The new figures are out. German women still earned 24% less per hour than men in 2006. This unadjusted gender wage gap is a useful indicator and underlines the need for action – especially since it has not decreased significantly in recent yearsin spite of women’s increasing education levels. Howeverthis overall indicator has the limitations of all aggregated averagesin that it mixes aspects of a different nature. In particularit is important to distinguish between potential discrimination (arising in the absence of equal pay for equal work) and “choices”like career patternsfor instance. At the same timethe latter are only partly driven by preferences – which makes things even more complex. We see four major aspects of the gender wage gapthree pertaining to women at largeand one specific to mothers (and a few rare fathers).
1. The professions which are female-dominated tend to pay less.
2. Being a mother slows down a woman’s career.
3. Women rarely make it to the better remunerated top positionsin spite of similar education levels.
4. “Equal pay for equal work” is probably not always true within companies.
