Messages from JUMP Forum 2010

I am delighted to announce that this year’s JUMP Forum went without a hitch. Last Thursday 29th April over 500 people, Women (and men!), turned up at the Hotel Van der Valk at Diegem for the 4th consecutive year, to listen to the inspirational speeches, attend the various workshops and pick up some useful tools to advance their careers, as well as beauty tips courtesy of the Helena Rubenstein’s Make-up Master classes. And, as if all that wasn’t enough to keep our participants interested, we were blessed with warm, sunny weather for cocktails on the terrace.

On a more serious note, only 10% of those attending were men. So there’s something I will already be looking to improve on for next year because, everyone was in agreement, that we need more men if we are to ensure better gender-balanced business in the future. As Avivah Wittenberg-Cox, CEO of 20-First, Consultant, Coach and Author, put it: “Gender balance presents one of the world’s biggest opportunities for the economy and for society,” but companies need to harness the opportunities and pick from the talent pool of women as well as men.

Some speakers offered advice to women for getting ahead in business and reaching their full potential. A fact that was reiterated by Mirella Visser, Founder and CEO of the Centre for Inclusive Leadership, author of 'De zijde route naar de top', who added: "Men and Women in leadership should be united to create prosperity for society and for companies." Her advice for women at the top or aspiring to get there: "Lead by example!"

But it was the debate on ‘To quota or not to quota?’ that divided opinion as much among speakers as among participants. Elin Hurvenes, Founder of the Professional Boards Forum, was on hand to tell us about the Norwegian story and how the country went from 6% of Women on corporate business boards in 2002 to 45% in 2010. She even added that although she believed quotas were unfortunate they were necessary as it would otherwise take us, through organic growth, 100 years to get where Norway is today and where the rest of us want to be in a few years from now.

Whatever your views on quotas, the overriding message of this year’s Forum was clear: “Tapping into 50% of the workforce is not a luxury. It is a necessity.” Thanks Lieve Verplancke, Managing Director of Bristol-Myers Squibb, for that quote. I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Thanks again to everyone who attended this year’s JUMP Forum and especially to all the speakers who took the time to come and help celebrate the extraordinary impact that Women everywhere can, and are, having on the economy.

Take a look at our website to see the pictures, the video, and in a few days the interviews with the speakers will be posted …

Winning in a Man’s World

Closing The Gender Gap: New Growth Funds Could Help The New Economy Look Less Like The Old One For Women-Led Companies

Glass ceilings exist in old economy companies but the new economy was supposed to be different, opening up a new world of opportunities for women. Progress has been limited to date but Women Equity for Growth, the first European investment program specialized in the financial and operational support of women-led companies, is aiming to level the playing field.

Advance your carreer

Take time to schedule your career growth

One of my best mentors once asked me, “Is your career on schedule”? His question somewhat surprised me as I never thought of a career as something to schedule. He then asked me, “Where would you like to be in five years”? Again, I was caught a bit off guard and answered, “I’d like to be in a job where my skills and talents are valued and I am making a difference for the company”. My mentor laughed and said, “Those are very noble ideals but they aren’t going to move you forward. It’s time you learned to set some goals.”

The High Cost of Part-Time Work

For working moms in search of that elusive work-life balance, part-time employment can look dreamy: You bring in some income, but still have time for your family, your home, maybe even (gasp) yourself. In fact, 62% of working mothers said they would prefer part-time work, according to a survey last fall by the Pew Research Center; only 37% said they’d rather work full-time.

The Ups and Downs of Home Office-Sharing

Lynn Antinore Ely —

Sometimes the people I office-share with can be so unprofessional! Like so many mompreneurs, I mainly run my business from home, which means sharing my corporate headquarters with some very immature cohabitants – namely, my 9-year-old and 6-year-old daughters.

5 cruciale vragen over tijdskrediet

The politics of motherhood

Despite radical changes in gender balance and the responsibilities of child care, in parliament it’s still business as usual. As any working mother will tell you, combining a job with raising children isn’t easy. In a society where it traditionally falls on the mother to provide or make decisions about child care, it takes careful planning, complex juggling and many personal sacrifices.

Companies and Gender

What women really want

WITH a tight race looming, all the parties are looking for any advantage they can find. One promising place is in the small but consistent political differences between the sexes. All three main parties are wooing women. The fairer sex is a familiar target for political parties. “Soccer moms” were thought vital to Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1996, and “Worcester woman” was said to be crucial to Tony Blair’s victory in 1997.

Report calls for more women in City to challenge group-think

The Treasury Committee publishes its report, ‘Women in the City’ – prompted by its work on the banking crisis, which shone a spotlight on the need for reform to increase financial stability, including improving corporate governance within financial institutions.

Life with the seedy men of the City

Rachel Shields —

Bankers and dealers may get paid big bonuses, but their attitudes towards women are no more advanced than a spotty teenage male’s, according to a new report. A dark-haired young woman gets up from her desk and walks towards the toilets, to catcalls from her male colleagues which include graphic jokes about anal and oral sex.

Women and the Knowledge-Work Trend

Rick Wartzman —

The news this month that women now outnumber men on the nation’s payrolls generated less heat than a burning bra. Relatively few major media outlets took note of the milestone, which was tucked amid the Labor Dept.’s employment report for January. And some of the analysts who did bother to pay attention pointed out that it wasn’t based on the government’s most reliable or robust set of statistics.

Celebrating Ada Lovelace Day With 10 Of Tech’s Most Influential Women

K.T. Bradford —

Happy Ada Lovelace Day all you women in science and mathematics! If you don’t know who Ada Lovelace is, hie thee to Wikipedia, or this very interesting little bio I ran across today, or the Ada Lovelace Day blog. The short version is that Ada’s mother, Lady Byron (once married to poet Lord Byron), was not all that fond of her ex-husband, and saw to it that Ada received an education in mathematics and music, “to counter dangerous poetic tendencies.”

The power of networking

M.Berry —

I’m a networker. I love meeting new people, connecting people and being able to help people out. However the word ‘networking’ often fills many people with dread – whether it’s fear of approaching people you don’t know, lack of time or simply not knowing what to do, many people tend to dismiss the idea.
